Should you Choose Home Care Or Residential Care?

30th January 2019

Most importantly, you have options!

What, where and how do you want to live?

Well, should you need care you have choices, you can choose to receive care in your own home or move to a residential or nursing home, choice is important.

Depending on your care needs will depend on the type of care you need, and where your care would be best delivered. It may be preferable for you to stay in your own home and have carer workers visit you or maybe you prefer to move into a residential or nursing home.

Just knowing ‘all’ your options is the first step to establishing the right care that will suit you or your loved ones and your lifestyle. We all have different ideas about how and where we should be cared for. This is such an important decision to make; and there are many emotional and financial considerations to be taken into account that can affect the health and happiness of not only you, but also your loved ones.

Let’s consider the differences between ‘at home care’, ‘residential care’ and ‘nursing home’ care.

Care at Home

  • Remain in the comfort of your own home
  • Live in your own environment, on your own terms
  • Maintains independence
  • Eat what you like, when you like
  • Watch what you want on television
  • Go to bed when you want to
  • Enjoy the company of your pets
  • The flexibility to choose the care you really want
  • See friends and family at any time
  • Dedicated, one-to-one support from regular care workers
  • Funding and benefits may be available
  • Your home won’t be taken into consideration when assessing your assets
  • Your home won’t be sold to pay care fees and charges cannot be applied against your property
  • You can stay together, as a couple, in your own home with one Live in care worker-saving on care costs

Residential Care

  • Move to an unfamiliar environment
  • Possibly have to share a room and/or bath room and other facilities
  • Eat set meals at set times
  • There is usually a shared television lounge
  • There are usually rules about bed time
  • Pets are not usually allowed
  • Permanent, live-in care is your only option
  • Most homes will operate restricted visiting
  • A team of carers work with all the residents – no ‘one on one’ consecutive care by a dedicated care worker
  • Funding and benefits may be available
  • Your home may be taken into account and sold to pay care fees
  • A couple will usually pay double the single rate

We certainly think care at home is the best option, both financially and for your health. Contact us today to find out more!
