At Lotus Home Care, we understand that keeping busy is one of the most important ways of keeping the mind and body active in old age. When ailments such as loneliness, anxiety and frailty start to manifest, having plans in place or hobbies to participate in can help relieve some of the stress, so that the person has a sense of purpose and a reason to get out of bed every morning.
Most people work hard throughout their lives to care and provide for themselves and their families, but the brain doesn’t stop working after retirement. It is continuously working, whether you choose to channel it or not, and so it can become open to negativity and even depression if it is not kept busy in a way that is positive. Hobbies and social activities are extremely important in keeping the brain healthy in later life.
It is normal for our bodies to slow down as we age, but they don’t have to stop altogether. A regular exercise routine is important for keeping the body as healthy as possible in those senior years. The healthier an older person is, the better quality of life they will enjoy. Exercise doesn’t have to be vigorous, but an hour of walking a day does wonders for the heart and research has shown that physical activity can have a huge impact on mental health, proving to be as effective as anti-depressants. Exercise can also provide excellent social opportunities, with sports such as golf, bowls and badminton encouraging bonding and friendship.
Having a regular routine can be very comforting to someone who is finding it difficult to cope with the changes in their body and lifestyle. Making regular arrangements to exercise, pursue hobbies or meet up with friends can help to maintain a sense of purpose within a routine that keeps the brain and body active. A good routine also helps an older person to maintain their independence for longer, since they are reminded to eat healthily and at regular intervals, as well as to clean and organize their home. Planning ahead and working out exactly what needs to be achieved within each day/week/month will ensure the brain and body is as mobile as possible in older age.
At Lotus Home Care, we know how important it is to keep busy and work hard with all our service users to ensure their mental and physical health is in the best possible condition. Contact us to find out more.
